Study Morning
William Shakespeare ~ Twelfth Night
If this were played upon a stage now, I could condemn it as an impossible fiction. (Act 3, scene 4)
Mistaken identity; issues of gender; grief and exile; the agony of unrequited love; the antics of gentrified and crazy buffoons; social climbers getting their come-uppance; the fool and his machinations; the ‘whirligig of time’ and fortune. Such a bewildering labyrinth of plot and people makes the dark comedy of Twelfth Night a world of exuberance and wonder. Come along to this study morning where we will examine the story and its sources, the critical reception and production of the play, and Shakespeare’s construction of theme and character. Through close reading of selected passages, we will also consider Shakespeare’s linguistic invention and his manipulation of the genre of comedy. The event will alternate between presentation, reading and discussion.
Suitable for those who are new to, or already familiar with, Twelfth Night, this Study Morning will dig deep into Shakespeare’s art and craft.
Please note: This session will be run twice (July 31 & August 14) - the same material will be covered in both workshops.
Admission: £12 (inc. materials and coffee) Brunch deal: £24 (served from 1.30 pm)
