Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking Statement

New Street Market, Woodbridge

1. Introduction

Modern slavery is a crime and a violation of fundamental human rights. It takes various forms, such as slavery, servitude, forced and compulsory labour, and human trafficking, all of which have in common the deprivation of a person's liberty by another in order to exploit them for personal or commercial gain.

New Street Market is committed to improving our practices to combat slavery and human trafficking. We have a zero-tolerance approach to modern slavery, and we are committed to acting ethically and with integrity in all our business dealings and relationships.

2. Organisational Structure and Supply Chains

New Street Market is a lifestyle destination based in Woodbridge, Suffolk, encompassing:

  • The Café & Restaurant: Offering locally sourced food, artisanal coffee, and independent brands.

  • Retail: A curated shop featuring craftsmanship from around the world (rugs, ceramics, and homeware).

  • Events & Community: A space for live music, workshops, and private hire.

Our supply chain consists of local Suffolk farmers and producers, independent UK-based artisans, and international suppliers for our global homeware collection.

3. Our Policies

We are committed to ensuring that there is no modern slavery or human trafficking in our supply chains or in any part of our business. Our internal policies reflect our commitment to acting ethically:

  • Ethical Sourcing: We prioritise suppliers who share our values regarding sustainability and human rights.

  • Whistleblowing Policy: We encourage all employees, customers, and business partners to report any concerns related to the direct activities, or the supply chains of, the organisation.

  • Recruitment: We conduct "right to work" checks on all employees to safeguard against human trafficking or individuals being forced to work against their will.

4. Due Diligence Processes

As part of our initiative to identify and mitigate risk, we:

  • Vet New Suppliers: For international retail goods, we seek evidence of fair-trade practices and ethical production.

  • Build Long-Standing Relationships: By working closely with local Suffolk suppliers, we maintain a clear and transparent understanding of their labour practices.

  • Monitor Supply Chains: We regularly review our food and retail partners to ensure they meet our standards for ethical production.

5. Risk Assessment

We recognise that the greatest risk of modern slavery in our industry exists within:

  • Global supply chains for textiles and handmade goods.

  • The use of temporary or seasonal labour in the hospitality and agricultural sectors.

We manage these risks through direct communication with brand owners and by staying informed on the origins of the products we sell.

6. Training and Awareness

To ensure a high level of understanding of the risks of modern slavery and human trafficking in our supply chains and our business, we provide relevant information to our staff during their induction. We encourage an open culture where team members feel empowered to flag any concerns regarding supplier behaviour.

7. Approval

This statement is made voluntarily in support of the Modern Slavery Act 2015 and constitutes our slavery and human trafficking statement for the current financial year.
