Friday night of the Woodbridge Festvial weekend kicks-off at New Street Market with a Q&A with Les Spaine, followed by vinyl DJ sets - DJs to be announced.
Woodbridge Festival is teaming-up with New Street Market to present a weekend of events as part of its 14th annual multi-venue festival. This year the festival is hosting Super Fly, the first project to celebrate Suffolk's role channeling American black music into the UK, and Spin, a multi dimensional art and environment project.
Friday night will see UK funk legend Les Spaine give a Q&A about his experience playing Us Airforce bases in Suffolk in the 1970s.
Liverpool's OG funk DJ, Les is a principle figure in the Super Fly project. As well as playing the USAF bases, Les imported US Funk music he was given at the US bases into the UK. He went on to be the UK representative for Motown Records, working with the label's golden era of artists, including Marvin Gay, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, The Jacksons and more.
One of two themes running through this year’s festival, Super Fly explores the hidden history of US airforce bases in Suffolk, and the role they played in the development of UK music from the late 1950s to the 1990s. Between this period the numbers of USAF personnel in Suffolk accounted for one in seven people living in the county. The project was recently featured on BBC Radio 4s Today programme, reaching an audience of nearly 5 million.
Friday night will also feature some of the first Super Fly installations and the new Super Fly Anchor, which will appear alongside Woodbridge Festival's Anchor's Aweigh exhibition, which returns to the park for a third year.
Just turn up!
